A Facing Pages layout contains left and right 'facing' pages bound along a binding line in the gutter between pages, similar to what you would find in a book, magazine, or newspaper. Following are instructions for creating a Facing Pages layout, changing a non-Facing Pages layout to a Facing Pages layout and vice versa.
Creating a new Facing Pages Layout:
-
Go to File > New > Project and select the Facing Pages check box.
-
When Facing Pages is checked in the New Project dialog box, the Left and Right fields in the Margin Guides area change to Inside and Outside.
-
QuarkXPress displays facing pages next to each other on the screen. When moving from page two to page three, you must scroll across the layout window rather than straight down.
Setting Up Master Pages for Facing Pages Layouts:
The default master page (A- Master-A) of a Facing Pages layout consists of left and right pages that represent the facing-page spread.
- In the Page Layout palette (Window > Page Layout), the facing-page master page icon 3 is displayed next to the words 'A-Master-A.'
- To edit the master page, double-click its icon or select it from the Page > Display pop-up menu.
- QuarkXPress automatically formats the layout pages according to the side of the layout spine they are on, so be sure to format both the left and right pages on the facing- page master page. For example, if you want automatic page numbers to appear on both the right and left pages of your layout, you must create a text box containing a Current Text Box Page Number character (Command for Mac, ctrl for Windows) on both sides of the facing-page master page.
Inserting and Deleting Layout Pages:
When you insert or delete layout pages (Page > Insert or Page > Delete), QuarkXPress will shuffle the layout pages as needed to maintain the proper left/right layout. For example, if you add one page before page four, then page four becomes page five, flipping from a left to a right page in the spread. If shuffling causes pages to switch sides in the facing-page layout, QuarkXPress automatically reapplies the facing-page master page. In this case, the layout pages will be reformatted according to the side of the spread they appear on. Adding, deleting, or moving pages in even increments will avoid shuffling, and QuarkXPress will not reapply the master page.
Changing a Non-Facing Pages Layout to a Facing Pages Layout:
- Go to Layout > Layout Properties. (The Layout Properties command is not available when a master page is displayed in the layout window.)
- To change a Non-Facing Pages Layout to a Facing Pages Layout, check Facing Pages.
- Click OK. The layout pages will now be displayed on the left or right side of the binding line. To arrange the layout pages in a proper left/right order, either drag the pages in thumbnails view (View > Thumbnails) or drag the page icons in the Page Layout palette (Window > Page Layout).
NOTE: The existing layout pages will be based on single-sided pages unless a facing- page master page is created and applied to each of the layout pages. Facing-page master pages can be created by dragging a facing-page icon to the master page section of the Page Layout palette.
Changing a Facing Pages Layout to a Non-Facing Pages Layout:
To convert a Facing Pages Layout t to a Non-Facing Pages Layout, you must uncheck Facing Pages in the Layout Properties dialog box (Layout > Layout Properties). Facing-page master pages must be deleted before you will be able to uncheck Facing Pages. When you delete master pages, items on associated layout pages will be lost, including text in any unmodified automatic text boxes. To copy the formatting of your original master pages before deleting them, do the following:
- Make a backup copy of your layout in case you need to go back to the original.
- Display the facing-page master page by double- clicking its icon in the Page Layout palette (Window > Page Layout).
- Select the Item tool and drag a marquee around the items on one side of the facing- page spread to select them all, or Shift-click each item.
- Group the selected items by choosing Item > Group.
- Copy the selected group by choosing Edit > Copy. (Note the X/Y coordinates of the group in the Measurements palette [View > Show Measurements).
- Create a new single-sided master page by dragging the single-sided page icon to the master page section of the Page Layout palette. Double-click its icon to display it in the layout window. Paste (Edit > Paste) the items copied from the original master page to this new master page.
- Enter the X/Y coordinates noted in step 5 above in the Measurements palette to position the group in its original location.
- Choose Item > Ungroup.
- Repeat steps 2- 7 for each side of each facing-page master page.
- Apply the single-sided master pages to the document pages by dragging the appropriate master page icon onto the document page icons in the Page Layout palette.
- Delete all facing-page master pages. To do this, click the facing-page master page icon in the Page Layout palette, then click the delete page icon.
- Choose File > Document Setup and uncheck Facing Pages.
Creating a Facing Pages Layout with the First Page Left of the Binding Line (QuarkXPress 6 & 7 only):
When you create a Facing Pages Layout, the first page is automatically placed on the right side of the binding line. Odd-numbered pages are always on the right and even-numbered pages are on the left of the binding line. To create a Facing Pages Layout with the first page on the left side, you must make QuarkXPress see it as an even numbered page. To do this:
- Create a new project (File > New > Project) and check Facing Pages. In an existing layout, choose Layout > Layout Properties, and check Facing Pages.
- In the Page Layout palette, double-click the first page to display it and choose Page > Section.
- Check the Section Start check box and type 2 in the Number field.
- Click OK. Notice that the first page in the palette is now on the left side of the binding line.
- To add pages, choose Page > Insert, select the appropriate master page to base the new pages on, and insert the desired number of pages after page 2. (If you are working with an existing layout, inserting a page before page 2 and then deleting that page will automatically reshuffle the remaining layout pages in the appropriate left/right layout.)
Note!: Remember, the first page in your layout is now page 2. The icons in the Page Layout palette represent the 'absolute' page number of your pages, which defines each page's actual position in the layout independent of any Section Starts or page numbering you have set up.
